The Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulation 1981 and the 1997 revised Approved Code of Practice:
The above states an employer shall provide, or ensure that there are provided, such equipment and facilities which are adequate and appropriate in the circumstances for enabling first aid to be rendered to his employees if they are injured or become ill at work.
Risk Assessment; The Approved Code of Practice recommends that employers should carry out a risk assessment of the workplace and then provide adequate first aiders to meet that risk. The number, content & location of first aid kits must be determined by the employer through his risk assessment of the workplace, having regard to the type of work, the number of employees and the location.A factory or chemical works which is likely to provide a more hazardous working environment will require a more specilised range of firt aid materials in greater quantity than a working office environment.when employees are working away from the employer's establishment, the employer must still provide first aid cover. all travelling employees must be supplied with a first aid kit.
